Glimpse
A Participatory Design Approach to Enhancing User Experience for Deaf ASL Signers
OVERVIEW
The Problem
Current video platforms embed "Audist" assumptions, prioritizing spoken language over visual communication and creating barriers for Deaf users who rely on ASL.
My Approach
Conducted research entirely in ASL with Deaf community members as co-creators, not just research subjects, to understand real needs and preferences.
RESEARCH
Participatory Design

Any apps that are developed for the deaf community should be done WITH Deaf people, not FOR them... If it's going to be accessible for Deaf people, you need to include deaf people.

Thematic Analysis

Competitor Analysis
Analysis of existing platforms reveals significant gaps in serving Deaf ASL users, despite their widespread adoption.
The competitors are identified through participants' frequently used apps.
DESIGN
Visual Identity - Clear, Accessible, and Deaf-Culture-Centred

The "Glimpse" app icon draws from Sign Language symbols rather than disability-focused imagery, celebrating Deaf culture instead of medical perspectives.
Accessible colour contrast and typography ensure readability for all users while maintaining visual appeal.
Simple Navigation
Familiar interface patterns make onboarding easy, while simplified information architecture supports varying levels of digital literacy across the Deaf community.

Visual-First Messaging
Visual-First Messaging
Video Recording Takes Center Stage
The large video recording button sits prominently in the center, with keyboard and additional features tucked to the sides. This design prioritizes how Deaf users communicate while keeping other options accessible.
Signing-Optimized Video Calls
Non-Overlapping Views and Smart Detection
One-on-one calls feature separate, non-overlapping video windows to prevent blocking sign language visibility. Group calls automatically highlight active signers and include manual controls like raise hand and custom screen sizing for optimal communication.

Cultural Identity Integration
Sign Name Feature
Contact profiles include video-based sign names alongside traditional text names, allowing users to express and recognize cultural identity in digital spaces - a first-of-its-kind feature honouring Deaf naming traditions.
